Collection: ' Azulejos'

This body of work was inspired by a journey through Portugal, where art, history and the human spirit intersect. Each piece begins with a hand-carved block print drawn from traditional Portuguese tile work, the, whose ornate patterns echo through the architecture and ancestral memory of place. These foundations are layered with oil portraiture and textured impasto, inviting the viewer into a space where past and present coexist. The interplay of structure and softness, geometry and gesture, reflects the layered nature of identity. Each portrait in the collection serves as a living mosaic: a fusion of feminine strength, intuitive knowing and the enduring imprint of heritage. This work honours the quiet power of reflection.

Artist Bio

Karen Bramhill is a contemporary Ottawa-based artist whose portraits explore the intricacies of identity and the unspoken truths revealed in body language. She views portraiture as a way to capture both likeness and essence, uncovering what is seen and unseen.

Her creative journey began in childhood, wandering gallery corridors and sketching endlessly, before life took her away from painting. Years later, while living in Malaysia, she rediscovered the easel as a path of self-discovery and returned to her true passion. Since then, she has devoted herself to creating portraits that reflect the dialogue between reason and emotion, with each brushstroke a step toward connection and understanding.

Her work is held in private collections worldwide and continues to spark conversation, invite reflection, and celebrate the richness of the human experience.
